Andres Iniesta called Real Madrid players after the FIFA awards
Barcelona surprised everyone on Monday morning when they announced that their players wouldn’t be attending the FIFA awards in Switzerland.
Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Andres Iniesta and Pique were all recognized for their efforts throughout the year with their inclusion in the FIFA FIFPro World XI.
A statement from Barcelona insisted their Copa del Rey game and the lack of adequate time was the reason for the snub.
Barcelona were represented by president Josep Maria Bartomeu, vice president Jordi Mestre, technical secretary Robert Fernandez and a number of other board members.
But such explanations did not go down with the rest of the world and Real Madrid in particular. Football legends in attendance like Roberto Carlos, Michel Salgado and Diego Maradona, also expressed their disappointment.
During the award ceremony, club captain Andres Iniesta apologized on behalf of his team-mates via a video message.
Spanish media Marca have also reported that Iniesta has gone a step further by calling Real Madrid players to apologize.
Iniesta made it clear to them that their decision had nothing to do with the rivalry between them, but it was due to internal issues within Barcelona.
The relationship between the Barcelona and Real Madrid board is virtually non-existent and no apology is expected to be channeled through any club director.
