Barcelona’s technical team worried about Lionel Messi
After helping Argentina reach the 2018 summer World Cup, Lionel Messi has arrived back at Barcelona as his attention shifts to club football.
Barcelona travel to Madrid this weekend ahead of a Saturday La Liga game against Atletico Madrid.
Thankfully, the Barcelona players returned without injury worries, and Messi hopes to continue his fine form.
Messi has been a fatihful servant of Barcelona all through the years and has continued in that same role.
But the technical team are concerned with Messi’s energy levels as he has played every single minute since the season began.
Barcelona kicked off the new season against Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup. And Messi was in action for the full 90 minutes of the two legs of the competition.
The La Liga and Champions League have been no different with Leo participating in all the games. And with Argentina also desperately battling for a place in Russia next year, there was no chance of leaving Messi out of the team at the time.
In total, he has already racked up 1,350minutes. It is still too early to raise concerns about Messi, but with his explosive game style, the technical team are aware this trend cannot go on for too long with injuries lurking around the corner.
The situation is due to Barcelona’s deficient attack this season. Gerard Deulofeu hasn’t impressed Valverde, Dembele is injured, Luis Suarez hasn’t reached peak form, and the likes of Aleix Vidal have been ineffective in attack.
When would Messi be rested?
Even though Messi wants to play every game, every coaching staff cannot wait for the Copa del Rey when Messi can finally have a rest.
The closest player in La Liga to Messi in terms of minutes is Dani Carvajal who has played 990 minutes.
Valverde knows he has to consider rotating his team, but only he knows when he would eventually decide to give Messi a rest.
Barcelona have three games before their first Copa del Rey game against Murcia on October 24 2017.
