Barcelona’s possible opponents in the next round of the Champions League
Barcelona were already guaranteed to move on to the next round of the Champions League as leaders of Group D.
It was a fantastic job done by Ernesto Valverde’s men who finished the group without knowing how it feels to lose.
But the journey in Champions League has only just began and it promises to get even more interesting and thrilling as it progresses.
There are a number of possible opponents that await the Catalans in the last 16 of the competition.
By finishing first, they would be seeded, whilst the runners-up will not be. Seeded teams, will have the advantage of playing the second-leg ties at home.
Barcelona would not be facing Juventus who finished second from their group. In addition, they would also not be facing any team from Spain in the next last 16.
So after Tuesday night’s action, the possible teams are;
Basel (Group A)
Bayern Munich (Group B)
Chelsea (Group C)
Barcelona cannot face Sevilla from Group E and can be drawn against either Liverpool or Spartak Moscow.
And in Group F, either Shakhtar or Napoli awaits, while in Group F, either Shakhtar or Napoli awaits and in Group G, either FC Porto or RB Leipzig awaits.
Real Madrid are finishing second from Group H and Barcelona cannot be drawn against them.
Who would Ernesto Valverde prefer
“We don’t know what could happen in the draw,” the coach replied as he avoided calling out a specific team.
“We will accept any opponent.
“In the Copa del Rey we’ve been paired with Celta Vigo, which is a tough team.”
When is the draw
The draw for the Champions League last 16 knock-out stage will take place on Monday 11 December in Nyon, Switzerland.
It will take place at 11:00am and fans will be able to follow it via live stream on UEFA’s official website.
