Borussia Dortmund coaches argue about the age of wonderkid Youssoufa Moukoko
Borussia Dormtund wonderkid Youssoufa Moukoko has been attracting serious interest across Europe as a result of his performances on the field.
But the 12-year-old is the news this time around for the wrong reasons.
Moukoko’s impressive stats earned him a call-up to Germany’s under-16 team. In just seven matches for the Dortmund U17 team he has scored 16 goals already.
And there’s now confusion about his age coming from within the Bundesliga club.
Dortmund’s U23 manager, Timo Preus does not believe Moukoko should be playing for the U-17 team in Dortmund.
“With Youssoufa, I can imagine that his age has only been guessed,” Preus said via Goal.
“Maybe in reality he is one or two years older. But certainly he is not 17. For him that is very difficult. There is nothing to blame him for, the boy is not cheating or anything.”
However, Borussia Dortmund’s youth coordinator Lars Ricken moved to rubbish such talk and insisted that toungster is 12.
“He is twelve years old. That is a fact and there is no doubt about it. Some media reports about him have been disappointing,” Ricken said via Ruhr Nachrichten.
Ricken adds: “He plays in our U-17 because we believe that he belongs to this age class in a sporting way. He plays in a very good team and has team mates, who support him well.”
