FIFA Best award voting statistics: How close was Messi to winning the award?
After 12 months of intensive action and sacrifices, players, coaches and fans were finally rewarded for their performances by FIFA.
The Best FIFA Football Awards was held on Monday evening in Zurich and wards were handed out to the best player- male and female, coaches- male and female, and the fans were also recognized.
The individual winners of The Best FIFA Football Awards 2016 were determined through a combined voting process.
Votes were cast by captains and head coaches of national teams which made up 50%. The other 50% was split between an online public ballot of football fans and votes by a select group of media representatives from all around the world.
Two of the best players of their generation- Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi were in line to win the The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2016.
Ronaldo eventually sooped up the award while Messi came in third. But it turns out the Barcelona man wasn’t actually close to Ronaldo who scooped up a far higher percentage of the votes.
With the event now over, FIFA has released
Cristiano Ronaldo: 34.54% of total votes
Lionel Messi: 26.42% of total votes
Antoine Greizmann: 7.53% of total votes
