Nigerian legend Jay Jay Okocha diplomatically picks between Messi and Ronaldo
One of the most talented players to ever grace our screens has got to Jay Jay Okocha.
With his sublime footwork and mesmerizing dribbling abilities he is a typical example of pure talent.
Okocha guided Nigeria to win gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and was a tremendous force for Nigeria in 3 successive World Cups between 1994 and 2002.
Speaking with FIFA.com, the legendary dribbler was asked to pick between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
The rivalry between those two need no introduction, and here’s what Okocha said: “I have to be diplomatic here, especially as I’ve a lot of Portuguese friends, but I tend to lean towards Messi.”
“He’s a more natural talent. Ronaldo is a fantastic player, one of the best I’ve ever seen, but he’s been a bit unfortunate to be of the same generation as Messi. Consequently, they have to share the limelight.”
Asked to pick on African to make the final three of the FIFABest Awards, he added: “It’s hard to name one at present.”
“If you’re talking about the top tier of players internationally, we don’t consider ourselves good enough to compete at that level.”
“We have to change that attitude, and then we’ll be able to produce a player of the stature of the other top guys.”
Okocha was speaking ahead of this year’s The Best Awards, scheduled for 23 October in London.
