Major disappointing news on Messi’s Ballon d’Or hopes
Lionel Messi and Cristinao Ronaldo are set to go head-to-head for the next Ballon d’Or trophy. The award is now fully own by French publication, France Football after their split with FIFA.
For the last nine years, Messi and Ronaldo have claimed the most prestigious individual award. Leo has won it 5 times and Ronaldo’s last victory took his tally to 4.
But after the just concluded season, they is a big hints that the Portuguese would equal Messi’s five Ballon d’Or awards. The Real Madrid man won the league and made history in the Champions League, while Messi won only the Copa del Rey.
Messi didn’t have a bad season on a personal level, scoring 54 goals in 52 appearances for Barcelona. He won the Pichichi and Golden Shoe as top scorer in the whole of Europe.
And in the Champions League, despite a quarter-final final elimination he still banged in 11 goals. Ronaldo only managed to overtake him in the final game with Juventus.
Lionel Messi left out of France Football Champions League team
But it turns out that wasn’t enough to earn Messi a place in the Champions League starting XI of France Football.
The French publication had no room for Messi and completely left out the Argentine. They opted for a 4-3-3 system and Dybala took Messi’s place in attack.
In addition, the only Barcelona player on the team was Neymar, and champions Real Madrid had 4 players included.
