Messi names his four main rivals for the Ballon d’Or
Lionel Messi is battling hard to regain the Ballon d’Or title which has eluded him in the last two years.
Cristiano Ronaldo has been the favorite in recent times and both players are now level on five Ballon d’Or awards apiece.
The duo have made the award their birthright and have won it since 2008, after Brazilian legend Kaka clinched the crown in 2007.
But age is no longer on their sides as they are both reaching the latter stages of their career; Messi is 30 years old, while Ronaldo recently turned 33.
And Leois under no illusion that he now has more competition in the race for the Ballon d’Or than he has, perhaps, ever had before.
“There are many great players around today who can win the Ballon d’Or,” Messi told WorldSoccer Magazine, while discussing his chances.
“In recent years there have just been two, but now players like Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Luis Suarez can compete.”
