Bold comments: Messi speaks out and names the player he wants back in the team
Lionel Messi was just recently accused of picking players he wants in the team to play. And the Barcelona man was forced to come out to deny such reports.
According to Messi, saying the likes of Sergio Aguero and Mascherano were only in the team because he said so, was a direct insult to them.
“It was said that I didn’t want Icardi coming to the national team, but I’ve never decided if a player comes or not,” Messi said in an interview with TyC Sports.
“Now it’s coming out that all that was said was a lie. I never said I didn’t want Icardi in the national team, nor did I make anyone leave other players out.
“Telling great players that they’re only playing because they’re Messi’s friend is disrespectful — and it’s also a total lie because I don’t run the national team.”
But in a bold move knowing he could be criticized again, Messi has said he wants Gonzalo Higuain back in the Argentine squad.
Speaking before leaving Russia, he was quoted as saying: “I’m sorry to talk about him (Higuain) for what he shows every weekend at Juventus, his club.”
“Beyond our friendship, and everything we have together, I say it because he lets the team see how good he is.”
Higuain has been in good form for Juventus, scoring nine goals in his last 17 appearances, but the striker played no part in Argentina’s final four World Cup qualifiers.
The Juve hitman has been a victim of criticism and has been blamed for their lack of success at major tournaments for his misses in front of goal.
Meanwhile, Jorge Sampaoli has revealed he plans to summon him for the FIFA World Cup next year.
“Higuain is doing very well for his club,” Sampaoli told press conference attended by Argentinian newspaper La Noticia.
“In the qualifiers the presence of Higuain, being a top centre-forward, was not ideal for him nor for the national team.
“We will follow him and hopefully there will be some possibility of summoning him (in the future).”
