Luis Enrique speaks about Barcelona player’s no-show at the FIFA awards
Barcelona players received some serious amount of criticism for snubbing the FIFA awards on Monday.
Apart from the fact that Lionel Messi was in line to win the top prize, his team-mates Andres Iniesta, Luis Suarez and Gerard Pique all made the FIFA FIFPro World XI.
The club had released a statement on Monday morning giving reasons for their absence. At the time, the Spanish giants had pointed to their upcoming home game against Athletic on Wednesday.
With Barcelona trailing 2-1 and just 48 hours between the match and the award, the decision to stay back and train was reached.
More details have emerged about that decision and manager Luis Enrique has now confirmed it was solely the decision of the players… the club had nothing to do with it.
Lucho told the press prior to Wednesday’s game: “In principle, the idea to go or not is individual. As their coach, I can only support them in their decision.
“There is a sporting situation that is more important.
“There are certain commitments the players must consider. And I fully support their decision.”
Barcelona welcome Athletic Bilbao to the Camp Nou for the Copa del Rey return leg on Wednesday.
The Catalans would be hoping to get their first win of the year.
